THE ART OF BORING SOFTWARE — Art-Direction Bible
The single visual canon for every illustration in the ENTROPY OS universe. Read this before writing or reading any prompt. It is to the images what _STYLE.md is to the prose. When a prompt conflicts with this file, this file wins.
These images are concept art for an anthology of incremental games disguised as boring 1998–99 desktop software. Treat the deliverable like the plates in a high-end "The Art of…" behind-the-scenes book: cinematic, painterly, deeply considered, melancholy, a little haunted, and absolutely committed to the beige. Every image is a full-bleed, print-quality piece. Generated with Gemini 2.5 Flash Image ("Nano Banana").
1. THE ONE-LINE BRIEF
Cosmic dread, rendered in office beige. A failing 1998 computer that is also a universe, and the small flickering minds inside it that fight entropy by making a number go up. Mundane horror. Sacred junk. The Second Law in a beige box.
If a piece is not at least a little bit sad, it is wrong. If it looks like a bright cartoon, it is wrong. If it looks like it could hang in a fluorescent-lit office in 1999 and quietly unsettle the temp, it is right.

Color law: Every environment is dominated by beige and grey, lit by the glow of exactly one accent color drawn from the relevant game (teal for the desktop/cosmology, phosphor green for UPLINK, spreadsheet green for XLS, fragment red/contiguous blue for DEFRAG, navy/red for INBOX, seed green for qBitTorrz). Teal is reserved for the ominous — the desktop void, the watching presence, migration, the end. Never use teal as merely decorative. The teal discusses you.
3. THE HOUSE STYLE (rendering)
- Medium: painterly digital concept art with a matte, slightly desaturated finish — gouache-meets-digital, visible brush economy, no airbrushed plastic gloss. Think moody key art and environment plates from prestige game art books, crossed with 1990s tech catalog photography and the cover of a forgotten sci-fi paperback.
- Finish: filmic. Subtle grain/noise (entropy is literally in the picture). Faint CRT scanlines and bloom where a screen is present. Dust motes in light beams. Slight chromatic aberration at the edges. The whole image looks a little degraded, like it was scanned from a 1999 trade publication that was left in the sun.
- Lighting: practical and low. The dominant light source is almost always a screen (CRT under-glow on a face, on dust, on beige plastic) or a buzzing fluorescent tube. High contrast, deep shadows, a single colored glow against grey. Volumetric haze. Office-at-night, server-room-hum, the blue hour through vertical blinds.
- Composition: cinematic and deliberate. Strong negative space (the void, the empty desk, the white grid). Centered iconography for key art and characters; off-center, lonely framing for environments and key moments. Wide establishing shots breathe; let the smallness of the mind read against the largeness of the machine.
- Detail bar: high. Real period hardware detail — vents, screw heads, ribbon cables, dot-matrix perforations, ball-mice, mechanical keyboards yellowed with age, CRT curvature, sticker residue, coffee rings, dust. The bureaucracy of objects.
- Anti-style — the clutter line holds in the art too: NO bright saturated palettes, NO cute mascots, NO glossy 3D-render look, NO rarity-gem fantasy UI, NO neon-cyberpunk Blade-Runner cliché (this is fluorescent dystopia, not neon), NO modern minimalism. Restraint. Beige. Dread.
4. PERIOD GUARDRAILS (anachronism = failure)
The eternal year is 1998–1999. Hard avoids in every prompt's avoid array: smartphones, flat-design/material-design UI, modern slick laptops, USB-C, OLED, widescreen flat panels (use bulbous CRTs), 2010s "the cloud" branding, modern cars, contemporary fashion, emoji, glossy app icons, RGB gamer lighting, drone shots that feel modern. Allowed and encouraged: beige CRTs, floppy disks, ZIP drives, dial-up modems, dot-matrix and inkjet printers, ball mice, ISA cards, ribbon cables, fluorescent ceiling tiles, vertical blinds, drop ceilings, server racks with blinking LEDs, brutalist office furniture, the smell (implied) of warm dust.
5. THE CAST & WORLD (who/what gets drawn — see _STYLE.md §2 for full canon)
The minds are software; they have no human bodies except their substrate. Render them as presences, emergent forms, or anthropomorphic-but-wrong figures made of their medium — not as literal humans in costumes. Suggested visual languages:
- FRAG (DEFRAG.EXE) — a consciousness made of scattered cyan cluster-blocks trying to pull itself into a contiguous body; a figure assembling/dissolving across a grid; the read/write head as its moving eye.
- The Seeder (qBitTorrz) — a quiet, generous presence defined by outflow; threads of light data streaming away from it into a swarm; worth measured in what it gives.
- The Macro (MACRO_VIRUS.XLS) — an intelligence made of green formula-light propagating cell to cell; a thing that is only a growing number; spreadsheet-green veins through a grid-cathedral.
- PID 1337 (UPLINK) — a phosphor-green process-ghost in a terminal; a figure of green text and load-bars; surrounded by its forked children; haunted by the OOM reaper.
- The Sysadmin (INBOX ZERO) — the last human (or the mail-server's ghost): a lone silhouette at a 3-pane mail client drowning in light, the only literal-human-adjacent figure, and even they may be dissolving into the machine.
- Recurring entities: the Archivist (an ancient, kindly seeder who returns for the last piece), announce-bot, the Auditors (red bureaucratic inevitabilities), the OOM Killer (a reaper at the load-ceiling), the Admin, OMNIDYNE (the ouroboros megacorp), the Registered Owner (the eternal failed customer), the grey-market dealer.
- The world: the dying drive's interior, the spreadsheet-as-architecture, the process-table-as-city, the inbox flood, the seedbox cluster, the teal desktop void, the network/the pipe, the Void, and the Procurement Authority of the Beige Pages.
6. THE JSON PROMPT FORMAT (one prompt per file)
Every prompt is a single .json file matching _TEMPLATE.json (see _EXAMPLE.json for the quality bar). The fields:
id— short stable id, e.g.char-frag-001.title— human title of the plate.pertains_to—{ game, lore_chapter, category, type }so it's traceable to the canon.aspect_ratio—"16:9"(environments, moments, key-art landscape),"2:3"(character plates, covers, portraits),"3:2"(hardware product shots),"1:1"(logos, icons, ephemera).resolution_hint— e.g."full-bleed, print quality, ~2048px long edge".prompt— THE WORKHORSE. A single dense, ready-to-paste descriptive paragraph (≈110–230 words) written FOR Gemini: name the subject, the composition, the medium/style, the master-palette colors (by name and feel), the lighting, the period details, the mood — woven into prose, not a keyword list. This field alone must produce the image. Bake the period guardrails in. If text must appear in the image, state it explicitly and in quotes.art_direction—{ style, medium, palette[], lighting, composition, camera_lens, mood }structured levers that echo/extend the prompt.key_details— array of must-include specifics.text_in_image— exact text to render (in quotes) or"none".avoid— negative array; ALWAYS include the period anachronisms + "bright cartoon colors, glossy 3D render, neon cyberpunk, mascots, modern UI".references— visual touchstones (described, not named brands/artists to dodge).nano_banana_notes— model tips (e.g. "lead with the single descriptive paragraph; specify aspect ratio; if regenerating for text accuracy, request the label text be rendered crisply").filename— the file's own name.
Quality bar for prompt: every one should read like a paragraph an art director wrote — specific, evocative, unmistakably this universe. No two prompts should feel interchangeable. Go hard.
7. NAMING & ORGANIZATION
Files live in functional directories: 01_key-art, 02_characters, 03_environments, 04_ui-menus, 05_key-moments, 06_hardware-props, 07_branding-ephemera, 08_motifs. Filenames are kebab-case and self-describing — what the image is: frag-defrag-consciousness-character-key.json, env-the-process-table-as-city-uplink.json, book-i-the-archivist-seeds-the-last-piece.json. One prompt per file. The art/README.md indexes everything.

Make the box worth pre-ordering. Every plate should make someone want to live in the machine — and be a little afraid that they already do.
